Description
Summary:SOMERS, NY -- IBM today announced a beta version of a new application development toolset for embedded systems -- one of the first of the many products the company will deliver in 1999 to help customers prepare for pervasive computing. A natural extension of e-business, Pervasive Computing is about extending the power of the Internet to a new generation of devices. VisualAge* for Embedded Systems, Java** Technology Edition, will enable customers to speed the development of software applications that connect small, intelligent devices to enterprise back-end systems over the Internet. Developers are now able to take advantage of Java technology and components to bring embedded systems applications to market faster, a task that until now was often a painstakingly slow and expensive process because developers had to build each application one at a time, designing them for use on a specific device. With IBM's new embedded toolset, programmers will be able to build robust applications small enough for embedded devices, helping them to meet time to market pressures while minimizing development costs. This new addition to IBM's VisualAge family, is designed for building embedded applications that resemble traditional enterprise-strength software--but are only less than 1 megabyte in size.
