A 29-year-old Winnipeg writer, Alissa York, won the $10,000 Journey Prize at the opening of the International Festival of Authors at Harbourfront last night for her short story "The Back Of The Bear's Mouth." The story, set in the Yukon, about the relationship between an 18-year-old runaway and an older hunter who takes her in, first appeared in the Winnipeg magazine Prairie Fire. The Journey Prize, endowed by James Michener with the Canadian royalties of his 1988 novel Journey, is given annually to a developing writer of distinction. The Harbourfront Festival Prize this year for a writer who has mentored younger writers and made an outstanding contribution to the city's literary life was presented to novelist Matt Cohen by author John Ralston Saul. The prize is $6,000 worth of meals at Le Select Bistro on Queen St.
