Description
Summary:Recent educational policy in South Africa, documented in the Committee on Teacher Education Policy's Norms & Standards & Governance Structure for Teacher Education. Discussion Document (1995), stipulates that environmental education must be a vital element of all levels & in all programs of the teacher training system, in order to enable teachers to teach about environmental issues within the framework of their subjects & thus develop a sense of environmental responsibility in their students. Options regarding the implementation of environmental education in language teaching are outlined, focusing on reading & creating texts in which nature or the environment is the subject & on argumentation skills centering around environmental material. A variety of activities is presented to illustrate these ideas. 2 Figures, 17 References. Adapted from the source document
