| Shrnutí: | Verb particle constructions in Afrikaans display the whole spectrum of idiomaticity. At the one end of the scale are found completely transparent constructions such as inkom & uitgaan & at the other end idiomatic constructions like vasbrand & aanbreek. Traditionally, it is assumed that a semantic analysis of idiomatic verb particle constructions like uitmoor, omkom, & ompraat cannot be done, ie, that no semantic information can be linked to a part of the idiom (in this case the verb particle construction). The motivation theory offers other insights. The focus in this study is on the type of verb particle construction that includes a preposition or adverb-like particle. Verb particle constructions in Afrikaans with om are investigated. Use is made of image schemas & metaphor to ascertain the type of semantic motivation in this group of verb particle constructions. It is concluded that the particle forms a prototypical conceptual category with a polysemous structure. The relation between the literal & the idiomatic meanings of the particle is also shown. 9 Figures, 10 References. Adapted from the source document |
