| Zusammenfassung: | Guidelines for the provision of echocardiography in Canada were jointly developed and published by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the Canadian Society of Echocardiography in 2005. Since their publication, recognition of the importance of echocardiography to patient care has increased, along with the use of focused, point-of-care echocardiography by physicians of diverse clinical backgrounds and variable training. New guidelines for physician training and maintenance of competence in adult echocardiography were required to ensure that physicians providing either focused, point-of-care echocardiography or comprehensive echocardiography are appropriately trained and proficient in their use of echocardiography. In addition, revision of the guidelines was required to address technological advances and the desire to standardize echocardiography training across the country to facilitate the national recognition of a phy sician's expertise in echocardiography. This paper summarizes the new Guidelines for Physician Training and Maintenance of Competency in Adult Echocardiography, which are considerably more comprehensive than earlier guidelines and address many important issues not previously covered. These guidelines provide a blueprint for physician training despite different clinical backgrounds and help standardize physician training and training programs across the country. Adherence to the guidelines will ensure that physicians providing echocardiography have acquired sufficient expertise required for their specific practice. The document will also provide a framework for other national societies to standardize their training programs in echocardiography and will provide a benchmark by which competency in adult echocardiography may be measured.
Les lignes directrices sur la prestation d’échocardiographies au Canada ont été développées et publiées conjointement par la Société canadienne de cardiologie et la Société canadienne d’échocardiographie en 2005. Depuis leur publication, la reconnaissance de l’importance de l’échocardiographie dans les soins offerts au patient a augmenté, de même que l’utilisation de l’échocardiographie focalisée au point d’intervention par des médecins de milieux cliniques divers et de formation variée. Des nouvelles lignes directrices pour la formation et le maintien des compétences du médecin dans l’échocardiographie de l’adulte étaient requises pour s’assurer que les médecins fournissant soit l’échocardiographie focalisée au point d’intervention, soit l’échocardiographie complète sont convenablement formés et compétents dans l’utilisation de l’échocardiographie. En plus, la révision des lignes directrices était requise pour tenir compte des avancées technologiques et du désir d’uniformiser la formation en échocardiographie dans tout le pays pour faciliter la reconnaissance nationale de l’expertise du médecin en échocardiographie. Cet article résume les nouvelles lignes directrices pour la formation et le maintien des compétences du médecin en échocardiographie de l’adulte. Elles sont considérablement plus complètes que les lignes directrices précédentes et tiennent compte de plusieurs enjeux importants non précédemment couverts. Ces lignes directrices procurent un modèle pour la formation des médecins en dépit de milieux cliniques différents et aident à l’uniformisation de la formation du médecin et des programmes de formation dans tout le pays. L’adhésion aux lignes directrices fera en sorte que les médecins fournissant l’échocardiographie aient acquis l’expérience suffisante à leur pratique particulière. Le document fournira aussi un cadre à d’autres sociétés nationales pour uniformiser leurs programmes de formation en échocardiographie et pourra servir de repère dans l’évaluation des compétences en échocardiographie de l’adulte. |
