Describes children's participating in dramatic play activities that are teacher or peer governed. Illustrates children's use of cultural symbols as material for story construction and social affiliation. Argues for a literacy curriculum in which cultural symbols are open to critical examination. (Author/SK) Examines the social & ideological processes undergirding children's use of media/cultural symbols, especially the superhero, as material for story construction & social affiliation, drawing on observation, audiotape, key & informant (N = four children), & written data from an ethnographic study in an urban East San Francisco Bay (CA) school serving different racial & socioeconomic groups. The project focused on children's participation in composing & dramatic play activities in the official (teacher-governed) & unofficial (peer-governed) school worlds. Using children's diverse responses to an unofficial performance of a superhero story, it is shown how children negotiate with text & each other.
