We live in a time of overwhelming uncertainty. Whether it is the consequences of the 2025 global trade war, the war in Ukraine, the outbreak of new pandemics, the validity of knowledge, or the possible extinction of humans as a species, the power of contingency has never been so profound. Understood as events outside the control of human agency, contingencies are fundamental for shaping our lives and central for thinking about whether and how we can detect, prepare for, and manage crises. Yet scholarship within crisis management studies tends to focus on the epistemological generating insights and solutions to thelogical challenge of contingency rather than its nature: “if we can only know more about contingencies and crises we can stop them and avoid surprises.” This places limits on the types of questions we can ask, what we can possibly know, and how we prioritize efforts to manage crises. This explorative article shows that our understanding of the nature of contingency has direct repercussions for how and what we can know. Using the categories of indeterminacy, conditionality, and uncertainty, it reveals the value of reflecting on the ontological wagers for generating insights and solutions to the complex set of crises we live with today.

RESUMEN
Vivimos en una época de abrumadora incertidumbre. Ya se trate de las consecuencias de la guerra comercial mundial de 2025, la guerra en Ucrania, el estallido de nuevas pandemias, la validez del conocimiento o la posible extinción de la especie humana, el poder de la contingencia nunca ha sido tan profundo. Entendidas como eventos que escapan al control de la acción humana, las contingencias son fundamentales para moldear nuestras vidas y centrales para reflexionar sobre si podemos detectar, prepararnos y gestionar las crisis, y cómo hacerlo. Sin embargo, los estudios sobre gestión de crisis tienden a centrarse en el desafío epistemológico de la contingencia más que en su naturaleza: «Si tan solo pudiéramos saber más sobre las contingencias y las crisis, podríamos detenerlas y evitar sorpresas». Esto limita el tipo de preguntas que podemos formular, lo que posiblemente podamos saber y cómo priorizar los esfuerzos para gestionar las crisis. Este artículo exploratorio muestra que nuestra comprensión de la naturaleza de la contingencia repercute directamente en cómo y qué podemos saber. Utilizando las categorías de indeterminación, condicionalidad e incertidumbre, revela el valor de reflexionar sobre las apuestas ontológicas para generar ideas y soluciones al complejo conjunto de crisis que vivimos hoy. |
