Optimization of design parameters of metal feeding system for quality improvement of strip edge in aluminum twin-roll casting

Shrnutí:To improve the quality of strip edge in aluminum twin-roll casting, ANSYS Fluent software was used to simulate the fluid flow behavior in different types of metal feeding systems (3C-type, 7C-type, and 2-split-type). Through simulations, the effect of design parameters (shape, size, and position of baffles) of the feeding system on the distribution of fluid flow rate and temperature at the outlet of the feeding system was analyzed. Based on the results of the analysis, the kind of feeding system was determined to be 2-split-type, and its design parameters were optimized. At the outlet of a feeding system, the differences between the maximum and minimum values of the flow rate and temperature of molten metal were 23.04% and 3.07% (27 °C) for the 3C-type feeding system, while 4.66% and 0.65% (6 °C) for the optimized 2-split-type feeding system, respectively. The uniformity of the flow rate and temperature of molten metal in the optimized feeding system was improved by 79.8% and 77.8% compared to that of the 3C-type feeding system. As a result of applying the optimized feeding system, the defects such as edge cracks were eliminated to ensure high quality of aluminum strip.
