Popis: In this essay, I present and analyze Variety, a series of static images created by Edgar Pêra using artificial intelligence and motivated by the work of Fernando Pessoa. Firstly, I try to establish a few symbolic links between artificial intelligence and Pessoa’s work to subsequently reflect on the impact of algorithmic processes on cultural production, particularly in connection with a more extended social history of artificial intelligence. To this end, I discuss Pêra’s creations from a material perspective that focuses on critical software studies and is oriented towards thinking of objects as the results of computational and cultural coding and decoding procedures.
