Popis: This review describes the place of trace elements in the management of critically ill injured patients. There has been a growing interest in trace elements as a result of their essential role in endogenous antioxidant defence mechanisms and in immunity. Burns and trauma are associated with increased free radical production and negative trace element balances, which contribute to the imbalance in endogenous antioxidant capacity and the extension of primary lesions. Supplementation trials have shown that early provision of large amounts of trace elements improve recovery after major burns and brain injury.
