| Beschreibung: | Ph.D. ; Yang Erzeng was a famous book seller/ publisher in the late Ming Dynasty, as well as a devoted believer of the Jingming Dao (jingming dao). Many of his published works carried Daoist features and characteristics. For instance, there are two hagiographies titled the Xianyuan Jishi and the Han Xiangzi Quanzhuan. As noted in the Wanli era (1573-1620), many literati devoted to compile Daoist hagiographies whereas, in the past, the authors of biographies of immortals had always been Daoist priests. This dissertation attempts to study why a significant number of literati of the late Ming period committed themselves to compile, rewrite, and publish Daoist hagiographies. The author of this dissertation will pay special attentions to religious and literary features of these Daoist works such as Yang Erzeng’s hagiographies related to the Jingming Dao and how they were shaped by the new trends of Daoist development in the Ming Dynasty. Furthermore, this study will attempt to reexamine the relationship between Daoist literature and religion of literati. ; This dissertation begins with the life biography of Yang Erzeng, especially focusing on his travels, circle of friends, religious experience in the Jingming Dao, and his Daoist publications. Secondly, this dissertation analyzes the Xianyuan jishi and Hanxiangzi Quanzhuan by tracing the sources of materials he employed and reconfigured. It aims to discuss the criteria of selection used in his literary materials and his re-construction of the Daoist immortal world and system in the Xianyuan Jishi and the Hanxiangzi Quanzhuan. ; Thirdly, this dissertation furthers to explore Yang Erzeng’s discourse of Jingming Dao in his publications. It discusses how Yang Erzeng constructed the religious system of Jingming immortals by re-writing and re-creating biographies of immortals in the Xianyuan Jishi and especially the Chuxiang Xuzhenjun Jingming Zongjiaolu.
