Popis: This paper examines the paradoxical role of competitive high school sports in the United States as both a unifying and an exclusionary force. While varsity athletics are celebrated for fostering school spirit and adolescent development, their exclusivity leaves many students excluded, with consequences for belonging, identity, and psychosocial well-being. Drawing on social identity theory and self-determination theory, the paper explores how inclusion and exclusion within school sports shape students’ self-concept and educational engagement. The study contributes to educational psychology by focusing explicitly on the often-overlooked experiences of excluded students. It also highlights implications for healthcare management, showing how adolescent belonging is linked to long-term mental health outcomes and system-level resource demands. By integrating psychological theory, empirical design, and applied recommendations, this paper aims to stimulate scholarly discussion on how schools can balance competitiveness with inclusivity. This work is shared on platforms as a preprint for the purpose of early dissemination and academic dialogue.
