| Popis: | A number of applications in the area of decision support require one or more models, simulations or other computational components to be run. Results from such applications may be integrated together statistically or merged with information from databases or real time measuring systems to aid decision-making in areas such as: defence, emergency-response, commercial or personal decision-support. We describe a system for invoking computationally-intensive, decision support models on distributed, high-performance computing resources, using Java and WWW protocols. We discuss a number of the key distributed computing issues involved in such a system and describe how some can be addressed simply using existing software technology such as: Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI); Remote Procedure Calling (RPC) and remote shell invocation. We focus on some speci c computational services that can be easily packaged for remote execution such as image processing operations such as Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) and a collection of simulation models. We consider both codes that run as native methods on a parallel or high-performance compute server and codes that can be remotely executed and which are transferred as Java byte-code originating from either the invoking client or a third party. |
