Description: This plot is relevant not only in terms of its content, but also from the point of view of modern anti-colonial discourse in Ukraine. The purpose of the article is to study the commemoration of Taras Shevchenko in the activities of Kyiv Prosvita in the period 1906–1910. The author’s hypothesis is that Shevchenko’s memorial discourse was an important component of the institutional functions of Kyiv intellectuals. The theoretical and methodological basis of the research is a set of principles of historicism, scientificity and systematicity; microhistorical, institutional and personalistic approaches; historical-genetic, historical-systemic methods, as well as methodological foundations of memory studies. Comprehensive and conceptual understanding of the formation of historical and national memory of T.G. Shevchenko by the means of activity of the Kyiv «Prosvita» constitutes the scientific novelty of this article. Conclusions. In 1906–1910 honouring the memory of Taras Shevchenko became one of the priority areas of activity of Kyiv Prosvita. Commemorative events in honour of Kobzar were characterized by variety and relative mass. Kyiv intellectuals supported the tradition of holding Shevchenko’s commemorations, raised the issue of commemorating T. Shevchenko at the general meeting of the Society, folk concerts, plays, literary, musical and vocal evenings, folk readings were held in Kobzar’s honour, popular brochures were published, funds were collected for the construction of a monument to T. Shevchenko in Kyiv, popularized the name and work of the Ukrainian poet in the provincial centre of Kyiv, in the cities, towns and villages of the Kyiv region. All this contributed to the expansion of the places and space of memory about Kobzar, the formation of the Shevchenko memorial discourse. A positive consequence of this was the establishment of historical and national memory, consciousness and identity among different layers of Ukrainians, despite the anti-Ukrainian policy of the imperial regime.
