Hedgerows and forest edges are two linear tree structures that are very common in rural landscapes and are recognized for their important ecological roles. Their management can be an effective lever for promoting beneficial ecosystem services, particularly for agriculture. In many European countries, hedgerows are the subject of proactive policies to protect and manage them more effectively. However, forest edges, although very long, are much less often taken into account in management. This presentation takes stock of these differences in rural landscape management policies. It proposes a framework for comparative analysis of the ecological characteristics of hedgerows and forest edges, with the aim of showing which are common, providing similar functions, and which require specific attention because they may induce different functions. It shows that forest edges receive much less attention, mainly because they are less likely to disappear than hedgerows and because they are created through afforestation. However, just as there are now precise recommendations for the sustainable management of hedgerows, we could develop sustainable management practices for forest edges, adapted to their specific characteristics. Surveys of farmers show that their management practices do not differ much between hedgerows and forest edges on their farms. The presentation concludes by calling for more detailed studies of forest edges in order to propose appropriate management recommendations. |
