Beschreibung: The text examines the function of canon law in the system of ius commune, focusing on the birth and transformation of legal literary genres such as summae and commentaries, closely linked to university teaching from the 12th century onwards. The chapter analyses the role of ‘open’ interpretative texts, teaching and interpretation tools of the Decretum Gratiani, how they progressively acquired an autonomous form determining the process of autonomy of canon law from theology. The analysis follows the birth and diffusion of the works in the various European schools and highlights the specificities of centres such as Bologna, Paris and Cologne. In particular, the interpretative techniques that mark the birth of the school of the decretalists and, subsequently, of the commentators in the 13th and 14th centuries are analysed.
