Popis: In the collective memory concepts, there is the base assertion about cultural meanings: at some point in time, in accordance with need, society appeals to the facts of the cultural and historical past for better understanding what is happening in the present and to assess the future. Cultural memory is a phenomenon of collective consciousness, which can be formalized under certain conditions as a various texts (in the broadest sense of the term), as well as as cultural monuments. Ideological heritage of the 1812 War is extremely important layer in the history of political thought. This article is focused on the issue of collective social and political memory about one of the greatest events in Russian and French history. In my article, I have shown semantic peculiarities of image formation of the 1812 war in national memory and in descriptions and researches by domestic and West European political thinkers and historians. One of the key problems of the article is correlation of historical facts of the certain epoch and their interpretation by contemporaries represented both by politicians and common people as well as by those who described the war of 1812 later. For the study of this problem, I am using discourse analysis and semiotic-semantic research methods of official documents of Napoleonic wars' epoch (Manifestos of Alexander I, the publication about Russia in the French media in 1811, as well as the memoirs of Russian and French contemporaries of 1812 events). I conclude War of 1812 first showed not only the political potential of Russia, but its powerful spiritual potential, expressed semantically and capable to resist the enemy. Russian victory in the 1812 War occurred also in the semantic space, in which cultural stereotypes and patterns form the symbolic basis of patriotism. At a crucial stages of the history, processes in this space lead to the rejection of all that is culturally alien to Russia.
