Popis: In the article the tradition of artificial scull deformation in Tobol river region in the Great migration time was investigated. 70 individuals from the Ipkulsky (III–V cc. AD), Ustyug-1 (IV–VI cc. AD), Revda — 5 (IV–VI cc. AD) burial grounds were the sources of research. In the craniological collection at least 27 cases of artificial scull deformation have been registered. 8 cases (6 males, 2 females) in the Ipkulsky burial ground, 15 cases (5 males, 5 females, 5 children) in the Ustyug-1 burial ground, 4 cases (1 male, 3 females) in Revda — 5 burial grounds have been fixed. All of them were attributed to the circular type. This basic type was performed with the help of a simple circular bandage that was wrapped around the head of young individuals. The bandage ran from the middle of the frontal region to the middle of the occipital and caused major alterations on these areas of the skull. A tradition of changing head’s shape in that population groups was registered on sculls of any age and gender. Consequently, the custom of scull deformation was not strictly related to social position of the individuals, which certainly does not exclude its connection with some other system of social stratification.
