This paper presents a comparative structural assessment of support components designed via generative algorithms, focusing on two representative case studies: a handrail bracket and a clothing hanger bracket. The generative design process, conducted in Autodesk Fusion 360, was performed under defined boundary conditions, material properties, and load cases, aiming to minimise material usage while meeting mechanical performance criteria. The resulting geometries were subsequently evaluated using Finite Element Method (FEM) to determine their stress distribution, displacement behaviour, and safety factors under operational loads. In the case of the handrail bracket, the generative solution yielded a substantial reduction in displacement from 1.286 mm to 0.371 mm, while the maximum von Mises stress increased from 47.5 MPa to 84.2 MPa. The corresponding minimum safety factor decreased from 5.781 to 3.266, remaining within acceptable engineering limits. Conversely, the clothing hanger bracket demonstrated improved structural performance: maximum stress decreased from 236.43 MPa to 137.87 MPa, and the minimum safety factor increased from 3.733 to 6.401, with a moderate rise in displacement (from 0.604 mm to 0.838 mm). These findings highlight the potential of generative design to improve structural efficiency and enable material savings in small-scale support elements. |
