Description: The article considers the etymological semantics of the formants expressing taxis relations in the Avar language. The author argues that the formants expressing independent taxis relations have been conceptualized in native speakers’ consciousness as the gnomic existence of an action, which acquires a temporal characteristic depending on the temporal parameters of the form, to which they are attached. The analysis is carried out by comparing the formants with their correlates in the Avar dialects and in other Dagestan languages.
