Popis: This article examines how young people's social positions in a Finnish lower secondary school are shaped at the intersection of their gendered performances and other social differences. More specifically, the focus is on what kinds of masculine performances invite collective interpretations that contribute to the performer's marginal position in a local school or classroom hierarchy. Based on ethnographic data and examination of the social positions of three young people in particular, the article highlights the collective nature of creating gendered hierarchies in a school context and the importance of gender and race in how young people's gendered performances are understood. Theoretically, the article also considers the question of change and continuity in young masculinities.
