Popis: This study deals with the theological reasons of Augustinians and Franciscans in favor and against the king’s favourite during the last years of the reign of Philip II and that of Philip III. The positive discourse about the favorite was based on the idea of perfect friendship, in the relationship of virtuous and equal men. However, the Franciscans judged that this could not happen because of inequality; the Augustinians, on the other hand, interpreted the bond as natural, the fruit of grace and merit. To understand the arguments of one and the other, we compare the notion of hierarchy in both religious orders with the help of the model of the angelic scale. While the Friars Minor understood the organization of grade as a reason for subordination, the Augustinians inferred the scale as a model of order. These differences enclose anthropological-theological-philosophical conceptions typical of each order that explain the respective positions related to the favorite. Finally, we attend to the positive discourses on the favourite of the Augustinian order that offer new points of views of its function from the theological perspective.
