The main aim of this paper is to describe the creation and usage of print module for printing a user-selectable map composition and for printing reports that work in the environment of MapServer. The MapServer was originally developed by the University of Minnesota. This application is based on the use of thin clients and non-commercially licensed software. The application is designed for an easy user access only through a web browser. The module allows printing a map without any requirements to install complex programs or without hours of studying complicated manuals. The process of map making is divided into a few simple steps. The user can define the symbology of layers, choose and customize compositional elements of a map and then change their locations and sizes. In the final step, the user selects whether to print the map directly or to download it to his/her computer as a pdf file. The application is implemented by the use of PHP, an object-oriented language: Hypertext Preprocessor and Javascript language. The application is also largely based on the opensource and Javascript library called Openlayers. Besides its application, we describe the print modules used for printing maps via the internet focusing only on those with the most advanced features. It should be noted that this issue is often neglected in the process of creating map portals. The reason is that there is not any company on the Czech market that would be able to offer a more advanced solution than the one created as part of this bachelor thesis. The important features for our application are geographic standards for publishing data on the internet defined by the Open Geospatial Consortium. We are using some of these standards for our print module although only the standards essential for the functionality of the module were selected for our description (Style layer Descriptor, Symbology Encoding and Thematic Encoding).
