The article discusses the history and interpretation of the painting "The Strike" by German-American painter Robert Koehler, adopting an Atlantic perspective. It comments on the publication of an image of the painting in 1886 in the periodical "Harper’s Weekly" and examines its depictions of the working class and of class struggle. The author notes that the painting was meant to call to mind the U.S. strike of 1877 and considers other contemporary strikes. He also discusses the rediscovery of the painting by radical Lee Baxandall in 1969 and explores its relationship to the American New Left. |
