The article examines studies conducted by scholars on the characteristics of cross-gender dance in Java, Indonesia. It stresses on the study of Paul Wolbers and R. Anderson Sutton in which boys performed a female-style dance for ritual ceremonies that shows androgyny which represents cosmic power and fertility. The study of Saskia Wieringa, Saya Shiraishi, and Benedict Anderson focuses that ferminity and masculinity in were modelled on images of characters from traditional Javanese theater. |
