| Abstract: |
The article presents information on Project Neptune, a pre-feasibility field experiment to provide details for a program of "Research Ships of Opportunity (RSO)," being conducted in the U.S. The project aims to test the feasibility of using commercial ships for collecting oceanographic data. The S.S. Java Mail is being used as the test research ship. The project is being sponsored by the Biology Branch of the U.S. Office of Naval Research's Biological Sciences Division. The article states that if the RSO proves to be successful, it will represent an advancement towards increasing the knowledge of oceans. It informs that the project completion will be achieved through the cooperative efforts of academic and commercial organizations. |
