| Abstract: | Application programming interfaces (APIs) have become the backbone of modern software ecosystems, enabling interoperability, innovation, and rapid development. Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft leverage APIs extensively to power their platforms, connect services, and dominate markets. However, their significant influence in the tech sector has also drawn scrutiny, resulting in numerous fines and legal challenges globally. At the same time, according to many publications, the legal landscape surrounding APIs is complex and evolving, presenting various challenges related to copyright, liability, data protection, and compliance with regulations. The integration of APIs into software development has revolutionized how applications interact, enabling seamless data exchange and functionality across platforms. Today, APIs are integral to cloud computing, mobile applications, and microservices architectures. This connectivity showcases how APIs can be about much more than just building desktop, web, and mobile applications. They can be put to work creating what many call an "Internet of Everything." Due to the increased networking in a global economy, there are new legal issues to consider. That explains the need to understand the legal implications of API use in various industries. The aim of this research is to propose a more secure, ethical, and compliant digital ecosystem by thoroughly analyzing the legal aspects of APIs and proposing solutions that will significantly reduce the risks associated with API usage. The findings will serve as a roadmap for policy makers, businesses, and developers to maximize the potential of APIs in a fair and sustainable manner. After a historical review of APIs and document sharing from a legal point of view to identify patterns and gaps that have impacted the development of new practices and policies, I will conduct a systemic analysis of the legal aspects of APIs by employing the laws of evolution, and the theory of inventive problem solving methodology. Then I will find the impact of the recommendations obtained in the plausible futures to maximize the benefits of APIs while addressing their legal complexities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
