LAY SUMMARY: Post-deployment screening is required among Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) service members returning from international deployments of 60 days or more. It was developed to aid service members who may have developed mental health issues. This screening is used to identify mental health issues soon after a member returns from deployment and to assist in early care provision, reducing care delays among members with a potential need. This article brings together key findings from an evaluation project that identified areas of the screening program that can be improved to benefit members. The evaluation project did identify some benefits to screening, indicating that it was mostly performing as expected. However, some unexpected findings were identified, and these findings highlight areas in which the screening program can be improved. These areas include improved communication on the importance of screening and everyone's roles and responsibilities, monitoring screening completion, improved training for screening interviewers, and monitoring whether the member received the recommended follow-up care. This screening program is currently being updated, and the evaluation studies can provide some guidance to help with this update. The Canadian Armed Forces' (CAF's) post-deployment screening has remained largely unchanged since its 2002 introduction. This screening is required for CAF service members returning from international deployments of more than 60 days. It consists of a questionnaire that assesses self-reported issues and is subsequently reviewed by a mental health professional interviewer. The interviewer then assesses the level of concern for the member and, if warranted, recommends follow-up care. The fundamental goal of the screening is to shorten the delay to care among those with potential mental health problems. Research to evaluate the screening program's effectiveness has been limited. This article consolidates key findings and implications from a recent evaluation project to inform those who manage and deliver the CAF post-deployment screening program of areas in which modifications would be beneficial. Collectively, the evaluation studies identified benefits to screening and found that it was mostly performing as expected. However, some unexpected findings highlight a need for improved communication on screening roles, responsibilities, and benefits, implementation of screening completion monitoring, augmented training for screening interviewers, and implementation of care provision monitoring when follow-up care is recommended. Le programme de dépistage après le déploiement des Forces armées canadiennes (FAC) est demeuré largement inchangé depuis son lancement en 2002. Ce dépistage est obligatoire pour les militaires des FAC qui reviennent d'un déploiement international de plus de 60 jours. Il est constitué d'un questionnaire qui évalue les problèmes autodéclarés et est ensuite évalué par un(e) intervieweur(se) professionnel(le) en santé mentale. L'intervieweur(se) évalue le degré de préoccupation envers le(la) militaire et recommande des soins de suivi si la situation l'indique. L'objectif fondamental du dépistage consiste à réduire l'attente des personnes qui pourraient avoir des problèmes de santé mentale avant de recevoir des soins. Les recherches pour évaluer l'efficacité de ce programme de dépistage sont limitées. Cet article regroupe les principales observations et répercussions d'un récent projet d'évaluation afin d'éclairer les personnes qui gèrent et livrent le programme de dépistage après le déploiement des FAC dans des volets qui pourraient profiter de modifications. Collectivement, les études d'évaluation ont relevé des avantages au dépistage et établi qu'en grande partie, il fonctionnait comme prévu. Cependant, des observations inattendues font ressortir l'importance d'améliorer les communications sur les rôles, responsabilités et avantages du dépistage, l'adoption d'une surveillance à la fin du dépistage, une formation accrue des intervieweur(se)s du dépistage et l'adoption de la surveillance des soins lorsqu'un suivi est recommandé.
