Abstract (Dutch/Flemish): Perceptions of a social, safe, healthy, and activating living climate in detention – Results of the Life in Custody Study 2024: The quality of the living environment in correctional facilities is increasingly recognized as critical to prisoner well-being and post-release outcomes. This study presents findings from the 2024 Life in Custody Study (LIC), examining the living environment in 28 Dutch correctional facilities using the updated Prison Climate Questionnaire (PCQ 2.0). The PCQ 2.0 assesses four main dimensions of the prison climate: a social, safe, healthy, and activating environment. Data from 4,177 incarcerated individuals revealed that hygiene and safety were rated highest, while autonomy, daily programs, and reintegration activities scored lower. Variations in perceptions were observed across detention regimes, with the most favorable evaluations coming from inmates in less restrictive regimes. The study highlights areas for improvement, particularly in fostering an activating environment and addressing disparities across regimes, to support inmate rehabilitation and societal reintegration.
