Abstract: Next-generation wireless communication technologies such as 5G and 6G are playing an essential role in advancing smart city infrastructure, and there is fierce competition for patent applications to secure technical standards in the field of communication physical layer technology. This paper analyzes patent trends in physical layer communication technologies, which are crucial for smart city implementation, and develops a research roadmap. Communication technologies are classified into four technical fields based on requirements: ultra-high speed/ultra-low latency, ultra-connectivity, low power consumption, and reliability/security. Using IP5 (Korea, USA, Japan, China, and Europe) patent data, patent trends in each technology field are analyzed. This analysis provides important implications for patent strategies and technological innovation directions for next-generation communication technologies for smart city implementation.
