This study investigates the effect of digital governance on economic development by using a panel dataset of 53 African countries over a period from 2006 to 2022. Our baseline results indicate that three dimensions of digital governance, namely government internet filtering capacity, cybersecurity capacity and online content regulatory capacity, significantly enhance economic development. These findings are further confirmed by several robustness checks including changing measurement of economic development, restricting the sample timeframe, and implementing different regression method. Additionally, the positive effects are stronger in African countries with a higher democracy level. Based on above results, we propose several policy recommendations to leverage digital governance for economic development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
