AbstractHistorically, public administration has been shaped by the philosophies of traditionalism, modernism, and postmodernism. In turn, the field has grappled with the limitations of each: traditionalism’s rigidity, modernism’s universality, and postmodernism’s dubiety. This paper introduces metamodernism as a transformative philosophy that synthesizes and transcends these competing perspectives through oscillation—a pragmatic interplay between opposing ideas. While serving as introductory research for a metamodern public administration, this paper advances public administration theory by contextualizing the contemporary challenge of governance in the arena of competing philosophies.
