I analyze how digital design influences community participation in urban planning. Digital representations of urban planning – in my study, an online vision board and interactive map – pose unique challenges because they are both representative of a city and are themselves built environments with their own logics and affordances. In a study of two modes of digital community participation in an urban planning initiative for the small city of Bangor, Maine, I analyze how each site facilitates community participation. I identify and compare emerging narratives on each site, revealing how the spatial dynamics of each site influenced emerging urban development narratives. I then propose future directions for increasing community participation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
