The article focuses on the current global political environment characterized by uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts, and challenges such as climate change and technological advancements. It emphasizes the importance of long-term futures thinking and participatory methods in futures studies to empower individuals and communities in shaping sustainable futures. The special issue, linked to the Futures Conference 2023, includes seven papers that explore various participatory approaches, including arts-based methods and frameworks for analyzing democratic instability and governance challenges.
