| Abstract: |
Accompanying research is a type of participatory research, combining immersion and dialogical relations. Originally conceptualised to evaluate technological innovations, accompanying research has proven valuable for a wider range of disciplines and now finds its way into social sciences and humanities. In reaching these disciplines, it confronts the well-established tradition of ethnography which, similar to accompanying research, studies tacit knowledge through proximity to the field. Yet to date, there is no methodological conceptualisation of accompanying research through an ethnographic lens. Therefore, this article aims to further embed an accompanying approach in social sciences and humanities by exploring its neighbouring practice of ethnography. Since accompanying research emphasises collaborative reflexivity between researchers and research participants as interlocutors, we adopt a second-person perspective as critical point of connection. In turn, this also contributes to epistemic discussions in ethnography, as the field continues to expand and search for methodological frameworks beyond first-person and third-person perspectives.
