Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) can be more than a passive assistant—it can act as a provocateur, stimulating critical thinking by challenging assumptions and offering alternative viewpoints. Rather than just answering questions or completing tasks, AI as a provocateur encourages deeper reflection, as shown in the example of evaluating Thomas Jefferson’s legacy. By posing probing questions and critiquing the user's approach, AI can foster a more nuanced understanding of complex topics, prompting users to think beyond surface-level conclusions.
