(p. 89) That is, management is preoccupied not only with harnessing sufficient labour effort and output but also with organising the production process including managing inventory, the division of labour, quality control, and the overall operational process. It develops a complex theory of labour management and production models based on the following empirical observations: (1) managers often do not implement the most effective and efficient production practices, (2) firm performance and practices vary significantly within the same sector, (3) Enforcement of control is hardly the only activity that managers are engaged in. Management Divided: Contradictions of Labor Management. It does not simply pay lip service to contradictions but by placing them at the very core of analysis - a clear reminder that contradictions generate an incoherent, unsteady terrain of firm management.
