Abstract (English): This article focuses on culture-based learning at the beginner level in the university context in Brazil. Using the example of the shared site of memory Volkswagen, this article presents ideas on how to gradually foster critical discourse competence among students. In addition, students should critically engage with the continuous processes of meaning negotiation and reflect on the function of language and media in the construction of Volkswagen's historical narrative. The teaching proposal presented in this article regarding Volkswagen as a memorial site and its symbolic significance for Brazilian and German cultural contexts forms part of local initiatives that aim to develop teaching and learning materials which are sensitive to location- and context-specific conditions. Abstract (German): In diesem Beitrag geht es um kulturbezogenes Lernen auf Anfangsniveau im universitären Kontext in Brasilien. Am Beispiel des gemeinsamen Erinnerungsortes „Volkswagen" werden Unterrichtsimpulse vorgeschlagen, die zum Ziel haben, die graduelle Entwicklung einer (kritischen) Partizipationsfähigkeit von Studierenden in Brasilien zu unterstützen. Damit einhergehend sollen die Prozesse von Bedeutungskonstruktionen in Diskursen über „Volkswagen" und die Rolle von Sprache und Medien reflektiert werden. Der in diesem Beitrag vorgestellte Unterrichtsvorschlag versteht sich auch als Teil der lokalen Initiativen, mehr Lehr- und Lernmaterialien zu erstellen, die standort- und kontextspezifische Aspekte berücksichtigen.
