| Abstrakt: | Globally, parliaments are dominated by middle-aged lawmakers, leading to descriptive underrepresentation of young adults in national legislatures. Recent research has begun to analyse the causes of this underrepresentation, implicitly assuming that a greater presence of young MPs enhances substantive youth representation. This study examines the substantive representation of young adults in legislative speeches. Theoretically, descriptive and substantive representation of sociodemographic groups are linked, resulting in more effective group representation. However, this argument does not go unchallenged, as moderating factors influence MPs’ legislative behaviour. Employing an inductive approach for quantitative text analysis, my findings corroborate the theoretical assumption for the German Bundestag. In floor speeches, young MPs under 40 indeed represent substantive youth interests more frequently than older MPs. This pattern remains visible even when accounting for moderating factors such as term length, mode of election, or district composition. Overall, the study indicates that descriptive representation can play a role in fostering substantive youth representation, an issue that may become increasingly relevant in ageing societies.
