Abstrakt: The afterword addresses a tension in the concept of cosmopolitanism between its European origins and its global purview. It identifies, with the help of the foregoing essays, four frameworks that served to globalise that concept in the Enlightenment period. Through law, religion, commerce, and empire European cosmopolitans were brought into reciprocal contact with the wider world. Through these means, too, non-Europeans encountered the concept; some reimagined and re-deployed it for their own purposes. Like Enlightenment, cosmopolitanism was a concept fashioned by and largely for Europeans but not vouchsafed exclusively to them. Its prospects transcended its origins – and continue to do so.
