AbstractMany courses involve developing and applying quantitative reasoning skills. In such courses, problem sets are often used to provide practice and to uncover each student’s grasp of the material. Ideally, a student’s solution allows the reader to see not only what they have done, but also why they have done it, and it includes insights prompted by the result. However, written solutions often mask the individual student’s true state of understanding. In this Quick Fix paper, we share an assessment format that allowed us to get a better sense of our students’ understanding of course material. It involves students submitting short videos in which they discuss solving an assigned problem or working through a derivation. We share observations about this type of assignment, recommendations for implementation, and the rubric used to make assessment manageable and transparent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
