Research shows that older immigrants are characterized by heavy reliance on their families for aged care. Yet, there is limited research to advance understanding of what informal family care means to carers of older immigrants living at home and the process through which family care is negotiated in immigrant families in the context of cultural continuity and change. This study aims to examine the meaning of family aged care and how it is provided and received from the perspective of family carers of older immigrants, currently living in their homes in Australia. Data were obtained from in-depth interviews with 100 family carers from 25 cultural backgrounds that are categorized into 10 cultural groups: African, Chinese, Indonesian, Korean, Vietnamese, Middle Eastern, other Asian, European, Latin American, and the Pacific. Using thematic analysis assisted by the MAXQDA software, this study identified four themes that describe family care for older immigrants: (1) cultural and filial responsibility; (2) relational and collective process; (3) physical and emotional strain; and (4) cultural continuity and change. The findings suggest integrating community and family care to provide culturally appropriate care to meet the needs of older immigrants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
