Abstract: This article explains the role of information confrontation (informatsionnoe protivoborstvo) in Russia’s grand strategy and positions information confrontation as a central element in a Russian grand strategy for the weak. Using Nina Silove’s grand strategy framework of grand plans, principles and behaviour, the analysis reveals how information confrontation compensates for Russia’s military and economic weaknesses, enabling asymmetric competition against stronger adversaries. Through a systematic examination of textual sources and Russia’s behaviour, this study demonstrates the doctrinal integration, institutionalised conviction, operational utility and prioritisation of information confrontation in Russian grand strategy. The findings underscore its dual utility as a defensive shield to control the domestic information flow and an offensive weapon to destabilise and influence abroad, to achieve Russia’s grand strategy goals. This analysis offers valuable insights into Russia’s evolving use of information tools, providing broader relevance for understanding asymmetric strategies in the digital age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
