Public transportation system– Metro is considered a vital megacities transport solution. From the first railway in London – England, by 2010 the world counted a total of 243 subways [1]. Public transit-oriented urban development is now a compulsory development trend in big cities, the high – density population around public transport stations witnesses the effectiveness and suitability of this development type. According to the decision number 568/QD-TTg on Apr. 8, 2013, Ho Chi Minh city (HCMC) was planned with 6 metro lines and line 1 is going to be operated after a long construction time. However, this city has not really formed a public transportation network to connect with this line to maximize the transit needs of city people. A single metro system application – that leads to an increasing population – and the fragment of urban space will not create motivation for sustainable urban development based on TOD. Although the city already had the plan to increase the capability to approach Metro 1 by bus (create 22 new routes, adjust 15 routes, 11 existing routes) [7] for passengers, they are forecasted that there'll only attract about 100.000 passengers/day, equivalent to 62% transport capacity on this route [1]. This study will summarize some research results and main solutions for increasing the ability to connect and land use with a case study in the Van Thanh station surroundings. The team also concluded criteria for challenges identification and the space transfer tool which has the capability to be widely applied in other areas as well as contribute practical solutions for TOD in HCMC.
