This study examines the motivations underlying community members’ willingness to share a range of resources needed to carry out essential everyday activities and the role that strength of social ties plays in that willingness to share. Set in three Washington state communities, the study aims to better understand willingness to share to help inform community-based disaster preparedness efforts. By engaging community members through a sample survey and focus groups, this research explores the roles of social ties, trust, and local knowledge in supporting anticipated willingness to share resources within communities. The study findings support the development of context-specific disaster preparedness strategies and suggest that trust-building within place-based networks should be viewed as a practical measure to support resilience. The findings further suggest that person-to-person and person-to-place relationships serve as critical resources for supporting community well-being in the face of disruption. The paper concludes with recommendations that can be applied practically by emergency planners and community-based organizations seeking to prioritize the distribution or development of disaster preparedness resources within community settings.
