Java: compilers or hardware acceleration

Java has become very popular in mobile and consumer devices. This year, analysts believe 150 million Java-enabled mobile phones will be sold. However, the use of Java in embedded systems has reached a crossroads in the face of increasingly complex applications, so what is its next logical step?
