| Shrnutí: | This paper presents new evidence from the eastern Llanada of Alava, that contributes to a better understanding of the social history of Basque in this area. Especially we focus on the case of Man Ochoa de Villanueva, daughter of a noble family from the town of Salvatierra, who needs a Basque language interpreter to understand a letter of authorization granted by his father. We provide accurate data of their ancestry to ensure that they actually belonged to a family of the local elite. Something similar happens with Elena Ruiz de Ibarreta, a noblewoman native of Arriola, this time in the seventeenth century. To complete these data we present two more pieces of evidence from Argomaniz and Marieta in the eighteenth century, where some village people request a Basque speaking priest and an assistant since most of its inhabitants could not understand Spanish.
