| Abstract | A light bulb idea moment My remote only works with a limited number of home automation product lines, and one of those was Philips Hue, a line of smart lights I'd heard about and dismissed long ago as too expensive and impractical. The TV network Syfy announced that its new TV show "12 Monkeys" would sync to Hue lights, allowing audio cues from the series to change the color and intensity of lights in the room.\n |

| AbstractList | [...]hearing aids were already going through several evolutionary changes long before that, says Soriya Estes, president and founder of Estes Audiology Hearing Centers, which has offices in Austin, New Braunfels and Boerne. Since the mid-'90s, hearing aids have evolved from volume amplifiers to sophisticated signal-processing devices that do a lot more than make sounds louder. According to data compiled by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, about 30 million people in the United States ages 12 or older, about 1 in 8, have hearing loss in both ears. Take it from a journalist (please, I beg you): Quit posting too-good-to-be-true scandals, conspiracy theories and fake celebrity deaths all over social media without making sure they're real. Whether it's in email or in a video chat, being more engaged in what others have to say than what comes out of your own mouth (or typing fingers) is a good way to be a better listener, a better friend, a better online citizen and a better conversation starter. The Windows PC game is a free, publicly available download and a major achievement for the 20 students -- programmers, 3-D environmental artists, animators, producers and other skilled game-makers -- but it's a bigger achievement for their school. "Since high school, really, it's all I've ever wanted to do," he said. The watch is available in enough varieties of band colors and metal grades -- from a plastic-banded, aluminum "Sport" model to stainless steel and gold models. For those of us who are always fishing an iPhone out of our pocket to turn on house lights, check text messages or check the time, the Apple Watch would be a more elegant, visible solution than constant phone fumbling. Amazon's gambit, of course, was not just to move chef's hats and "50 Shades of Grey" DVDs, but to get people on board its Prime service, which boosts its streaming TV customer numbers for shows like "Transparent" and expands ears for its Prime Music service. A light bulb idea moment My remote only works with a limited number of home automation product lines, and one of those was Philips Hue, a line of smart lights I'd heard about and dismissed long ago as too expensive and impractical. The TV network Syfy announced that its new TV show "12 Monkeys" would sync to Hue lights, allowing audio cues from the series to change the color and intensity of lights in the room.\n The programs, whether they're after school or summer camps, are typically cooperative (there's no tears-inducing robot competitions), project-oriented (all girls learn how to design their own video games) and inquiry-based, which means the girls are active participants. At some dumb point, I got the dumb idea to buy a dumb waterproof case for my iPhone and attempt a dumb live broadcast using the app Periscope while I did some dumb snorkeling and filmed underwater. In the idle moments where I would normally have pulled out my phone to browse the Web or check social media -- as a passenger in a moving vehicle, or while waiting for my wife and daughters to try on clothes at a shop -- I instead had to just sit. The game is fast and fun, not unlike popular first-person online shooters such as "Modern Warfare," but the weapons are paint rollers and splatter guns, the environments friendly and destined to be splattered with bright colors, and the entire tone of the game is goofily cool. To distance itself as much as possible from Windows 8. Because "10" is a nice, clean number and translates nicely to Roman numerals. The basics are that you'll need a computer or tablet with a 1 gigahertz or faster processor, 1 gigabyte or RAM and 16 gigabytes of hard drive space for the 32-bit version or twice the RAM and hard drive space for the 64-bit version. Another big emerging trend, which I'll write about in a future column, is the popularity of anonymous apps such as Yik Yak on college campuses. [...]companies that were more smartly integrated into the fest, such as Samsung (with some of the most lusted-after private music shows, including D'Angelo and Mary J. Blige) and Mazda (free downtown rides), got a warm bath of buzz from attendees. "When I'm on my way to buy Product A, I tell myself a story of why I want to buy Product B. The product is the marketing, the entire user experience," including hands-off but accessible customer support. When Apple introduced the iPad five years ago, there was no real market for tablet computers that weren't sold as bulky tools for certain workplaces. According to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, about 41 million people play fantasy sports in the U.S. and Canada. On Monday, the fest added new featured speakers including U.S. Sen Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) in a conversation with Texas Tribune editor Evan Smith; a panel with newscaster Dan Rather, New York Times writer Nick Bilton and Dan Pfeiffer, assistant and senior adviser to President Barack Obama; CNBC's Julia Boorstin in a panel with Mashable's Pete Cashmore; Investors Exchange CEO Brad Katsuyama; and Facebook's global director of diversity Maxine Williams in a presentation with Rebuild the Dream president Van Jones. Missing (as of this writing) sponsors and events at SXSW 2015 that were here last year: the iTunes Music Festival, Samsung, Chevrolet, Doritos, tapings of Bravo TV's "Watch What Happens Live" with Andy Cohen, "Late Night with Seth Meyers" tapings, Nintendo and Pennzoil's live "Mario Kart" racing, and Subway's unappealing "Flatizza" pizza product. Cervini said there are no plans to make the app require a fee anytime soon; he said he's focused on building a well-designed app that offers features not found on social networks such as Facebook, where he says people's news feeds are "dominated by the kind of heteronormative society we live in." Code can consist of millions and millions of lines for one program (say, Microsoft Word) or a simple command from the Website CodeConquest.com written in Python: print 'Hello, world!' All that does is display the text, 'Hello, world!' on a screen. Being an entrepreneur in tech who wants a better understanding of what their contractors are doing, journalists who want to build better tools to collect and manage data for their jobs and amateur app developers are just a few grown-up reasons to learn coding, whether in formal classes, at local meetups or internally. Last week, when on the same day United Airlines, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Stock Exchange were stalled by computer glitches, one analyst from the research firm Gartner seemed ready to throw in the towel on human brainpower. Art Markman, a University of Texas professor of psychology who edits the journal "Cognitive Science," says that over time, we've gotten more used to the idea of yielding control to computer systems, but when it comes to the idea of robots made to resemble us, we are bothered by factors we might not even be aware of. Earlier this year, an app called "Meerkat" got lots of attention, especially at South by Southwest Interactive, for making it dead-easy to broadcast from an iPhone. iPhone cameras are much better now than a few years ago, mobile Internet connections are faster and more stable and people are more comfortable sharing video online in this age of selfies. Without the layers of camera operators, editors and TV signal clutter, when it's just a phone between you and Oprah, it feels like magic. Some of the money was spent backing projects friends were taking on such as a touring one-man show, a self-published photo-book project documenting mysticism in Cambodia, TV recaps on a writer's personal website and a new online home for a video series made by two old friends. [...]the bulk of the money I've spent on Kickstarter has been on merchandise -- board games (an educational one for the kids called "Robot Turtles," a lot of zombie games for me), a podcasting fundraiser for a show I really wanted to hear, a new album from an Austin band I love and a card game featuring art from a popular Internet artist. Because of potential conflicts of interest, I've had to avoid backing Austin tech projects that I might need to cover as news, including Richard Garriott's $1.9 million "Shroud of the Avatar" campaign and the Chris Roberts behemoth "Star Citizen," which raised $2.1 million on Kickstarter and has reached $83 million and counting in funds raised, including money pulled on its own website. [...]we've come to take for granted that our ever-smarter tools (phones, computers, email) and even those with modern brain transplants (TVs, refrigerators, cars) are telling us stuff all the time. On Windows PCs, Macs, iOS, Android and other mobile devices and on social networks, your settings or control panels will have an option for turning off notifications. |
