Description
Summary:A high‐performance computer system consists of a set of compute nodes as well as an interconnection network that connects the nodes in the systems. This chapter describes the architectures of high‐performance computer systems and the interconnection networks. The interconnection networks used in these systems are scalable static interconnection networks, such as three‐dimensional (3D) torus, fat‐tree, and hypercubes. A high‐performance interconnection network, such as a hypercube, an n‐dimensional torus, or a fat‐tree, is used to connect all the compute nodes together. The chapter introduces some popular topologies of interconnection networks, including two‐dimensional (2D) mesh and torus, 3D mesh and torus, hypercube, tree and fat tree, and k‐ary n‐cube. The interconnection network that connects all the nodes together plays an important role in the parallel and distributed high‐performance systems. The node degree and diameter of an interconnection network are two important measures for achieving high performance of supercomputers at low cost.
