Description
Summary:Clustering and classification are two related activities sometimes used as synonyms. Two streams of clustering research emerged – one inside pattern recognition and the other within data analysis. This chapter first presents an optimization framework for a general clustering problem and discusses the clustering of networks and clustering networks. It then describes some standard approaches for solving the clustering problem. The discussion then covers the concepts of clustering graphs and networks and clustering in graphs and networks and the use of the agglomerative method for relational constraints. To illustrate the hierarchical clustering with relational constraints, the chapter uses two examples: clustering the US states according to the selected variables into geographically contiguous clusters; and clustering the authors from the network clustering literature according to their citations into clusters with a single leaders group.
